History of professional and environmental health engineering department of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences

History of environmental health in Iran

This field dates back to about 40 years ago when improvement assistance and environment health assistance courses were run after health environment engineering office was established in the former Ministry of Health. In 1966, this course turned to higher improvement course followed by bachelor’s and master’s degrees of improvement engineering. After the Cultural Revolution, bachelor’s degree program turned into two degrees: associate’s degree in environment health and unintegrated bachelor’s degree in environmental health and the master’s degree title was changed to environmental health engineering.

History of environmental health engineering in Mashhad University of Medical Sciences

 As a paramedical and health faculty department and besides optometry and general health departments, environmental health engineering department was established in February 1994. At first, it was located in Azadi Street. Then, it was moved to Parastar St. next to Qaem Hospital. In 2003, together with other departments of the paramedical and health faculty, this department moved to Felestin St. at the beginning of Malek Abad Blvd. with separation of the above two faculties and establishment of the faculty of health in 2009, together with health and management, biostatistics and professional health departments, this department was moved to its new place in Daneshgah St. in building number 2 of the former medical university.

General aims and perspectives

The aim of this department is training able manpower in the field of management and implementation of environmental health projects through providing educational services for the youth of the country by applying the new technology-related knowledge. In addition, this department has turned into one of the most significant fields of study in the country through improving the quality and quantity of this educational course, being regarded as a model for environmental health education programs in the region and the world.

Training expert and wise human resources, who are able to detect, evaluate, prepare reports, observe, assess and control environmental health problems and can perform some of the plans based on the current guidelines.

Every member of this department believes that team work, mutual respect, friendly and efficient communication with each other and students, avoidance of any discrimination in educational, research and implementation activities will lead to the use of maximum energy of students. In addition, respect for management principles of the department can help advancing the goals of the department.

Expectations from students

The field of environmental health has been established to by adherence to the values of society and standard regulations and according to the achievements, developments and regional and international changes, educational programs be provided for skilled and talented youth of the country.

Students of this field are talented, skilled and efficient, and are able to detect, prevent and control environmental pollutants through planning, designing, managing, teaching and implementing at a favorable level, leading to improved culture of environmental health and health level of the society and taking effective steps toward environmental protection.
